across the middle of Lake Erie, when he made the 24.7 mile hourney in 11 hours
and 53 minutes. He broke Bob North's 1989 record by 59 minutes. Heynes started

The former University of Pittsburgh
Swim Team captain attributed much of his success to calculated nutrition and
sports psychology as well as the obvious hard training.
Heynes starts this fall as the
assistant water polo coach at McDowell, having served as assistant swim coach
for the Trojans during the 2000-2001 season. He was head water polo and swimming
coach at Penn State Behrend for three years.

Nebraska and three years at Edinboro University where he was a multiple

Kocan, Swabb break more records as MIST takes 11th at Cleveland State meet

disqualification in one event couldn't keep Marie Georger from winning the high
point trophy in the 9-10 age group at the Braun Meet at Cleveland State

Rookie of the Year honors went to goalie John Deibel
and left-hander Colleen Harriger. McDowell places
sixth at states, North Penn wins
McDowell lost to top seed North Penn and #4
Wilson before beating Wyoming Valley West at the Men's Pennsylvania State Water
Polo Championships at Cumberland Valley High School. Derek Sieber scored three
goals and Sean Tharpe and Andrew Gorniak scored twice in a 12-7 loss to the
North Penn Knights. Against Wilson, the Trojans trailed 4-3 after one period,
but Wilson pulled away in the second and won 14-6. Sieber scored twice
while Rich DiLoreto, Justin Slick, Ryan Lechner and Keith Meehan added single
goals.
Sieber lead McDowell with four goals in the Trojans'
12-7 win over Wyoming Valley West, which advanced the team into the fifth place
game. Slick and Gorniak each had two goals and Lechner, and Tharpe each had
one.
The the fifth place game, Cathedral Prep beat McDowell
13-2 as only Sieber could score.
North Penn beat Governor Mifflin to win it's second
state title. Souderton beat Wilson for third.
Rich DiLoreto finished the season as McDowell's leading
shot blocker in goal with 469 career saves and earned first team All-State
honors. Derek Sieber was named to the state's second team and Andrew Gorniak

total to 75, a new single season record. His 82 career sprints are 4th on the
all-time list.
McDowell
wins Pennsylvania State Water Polo Championship
McDowell won it's first women's
water polo state championship Saturday (Oct. 30) defeating Wilson High School
6-3 at Cumberland Valley High School. McDowell trailed after the first quarter
for the first time all season, when Wilson scored two goals and held the
Trojan's scoreless. The Trojans scored 3 goals in the second and held the
Bulldogs without a goal the next two periods, to lead 3-2 at the half and 5-2
with one quarter to go. McDowell's surprise off the bench Amanda Thompson
scored one of her three goals at the end of the period when her shot from the
right flat hit the lower left corner of the cage as time expired. That goal
ignited the Trojans who seemed destined to win their first state title.
A Wilson fast break that might have led to a goal was
foiled by goalie Lorraine Negron's foul, yet that drew a penalty shot which
Bulldog Megan Sculley scored. Thompson scored a fourth quarter lob from half
pool which just grazed off the tops of the Wilson goalie's fingers and
McDowell's vaunted defense hung in from there to ice it at 6-3.
Alicia Sutton, Katelyn Hansen and Lauren Myrick each
got single goals for McDowell. Great passing and teamwork abounded as Myrick
made two assists and Aly Milloy, Hansen, Tenley Marsteller and Negron made one
assist.
The Trojan's stifling, switching defense paid dividends
again, as it has all season, preventing Wilson from getting all but a few decent
shots on goal. Of the sevenx good shots the Bulldogs got off, three were in man
up situations and Negron blocked two of those. One was the penalty shot, and
only three were off even up front court plays. One of those three was blocked in
the field by Hansen, who seemed to be everywhere.
McDowell lead in time of possession, helped by Lauren
Myrick winning three of the four sprints that start each period. McDowell season
leader in steals, Marsteller, got two more, and Hansen, Emily Chereson, Myrcik,
Sutton and Negron each got one.
Sutton and Marsteller each drew two ejections off the
bulldogs. Ashley McLellan and Emily Chereson played incredible individual and
team defense, almost completely stiffling Wilson's drives.
To get to the championship game McDowell first cruised
past North Allegheny 12-0. Two meter dynamo Hansen scored four and Myrcik and
Sutton added two more. Milloy, Kelly Martin, Rachel Rzymek, and Emily Anderson
each scored once.
McDowell next beat Wyoming Valley West13-6 with Sutton
and Myrick each scoring three, Milloy, McLellan and Hansen two, and Thompson
one.
IN the most physical game of the the season, North Penn
grabbed, bumped and thrashed the Trojan's for three periods in a brilliant
strategy by two time coach of the year Bill Bartle to take away McDowell's
counter-attack. McDowell struggle along with a slower offense leading 2-0 after
the first, 2-1 after the second, and 3-1 after the third. Superior conditioning
paid off in the final period though, as the Trojans won 5-2 and advanced to
their first even state final. McDowell's highest finish previously was a third
place in in 1999.
Alicia Sutton, Katelyn Hansen and Lorraine Negron were
named First Team All-State. Tenley MArsteller earned second team honors and
